Leduc Drama Society presents Head Over Heels
Songs by The Go-Go's
Based upon The Arcadia by Sir Philip Sidney
Conceived and original book by Jeff Whitty
Adapted by James Magruder

An epic love story based on Philip Sidney’s Arcadia.”Head Over Heels," the bold new musical comedy from the visionaries that rocked Broadway with "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," "Avenue Q," and "Spring Awakening."
This laugh-out-loud love story is set to the music of the iconic 1980’s all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, including the hit songs, “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Vacation,” Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a Place on Earth” and “Mad About You.”
A hilarious, exuberant celebration of love, "Head Over Heels" follows the escapades of a royal family on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction—only to discover the key to their realm’s survival lies within each of their own hearts.

PRODUCTION TEAM:
Producer: Cyndi Wagner
Director/Choreographer: Linette Smith

2) Sign up for a five-minute audition slot, using the following form: https://forms.gle/TKPbCT1ovCGHofVm8
3) Complete the audition google form: https://forms.gle/pfkdS3B6WoX4m8Qg8
4) Read the script! Seriously, please read the scripts before you audition! https://broadwaylicensing.com/.../broadway/head-over-heels/
5) Choose a song! Guidelines below.

Audition Preparation
When choosing a song for your initial audition, there are two options:
1) A song from the show (list available at script link above)
2) A song not from the show but one close in period and style; your generation is most assuredly aware of current musical theatre and its composers and styles so those auditioning are welcome to make an informed choice if you choose this option.
Please bring a device on which to play your instrumental track (we will try to have all the hookup options for you)

Character Descriptions are listed below:

Basilius (masculine presenting)
King of Arcadia. A hothead, but not a despot. Basilius blindly thinks Arcadia is doing great under his rule.
Vocal range: tenor

Gynecia (feminine presenting)
Queen of Arcadia: wise, sceptical of her husbands rule.
Vocal range: alto

Pythio (non-binary – ideally seeking a performer who falls outside the gender binary)
The Oracle; powerful, mysterious. Demanding. Great sense of humor–can see through everyone–they are the Oracle of Delphi, after all.
Vocal range: alto or tenor

Pamela (feminine presenting)
Basilius and Gynecia’s older daughter. Confident and obsessed with her appearance. Known to be the most beautiful bachelorette throughout Arcadia.
Vocal range: mezzo-soprano/belt

Philoclea (feminine presenting)
Basilius and Gynecia’s younger daughter. Shy and a “good girl”, she
yearns to follow her heart rather than obey her father’s orders.
Vocal range: soprano/belt

Dametas (masculine presenting)
The King’s viceroy; father to Mopsa.
Vocal range: tenor, baritone, bass

Mopsa (feminine presenting)
Handmaiden to Pamela. Warm, skeptical. Growing up without a mother has made her wise beyond her years about everyone and everything,
Vocal range: mezzo-soprano/belt

Musidorus (masculine presenting)
A young shepherd who courts after Philoclea. A very offbeat hero who is great with physical comedy.
Vocal range: tenor

Ensemble
The charismatic individuals to inhabit the kingdom of Arcadia. Dance skill an asset.

In a quiet, foggy town in an unassuming neighbourhood known as Misty Oaks, there is a sinister force lurking within the walls of what the town calls Ripper House. Built on an ancient burial ground in the 1920’s by The Butcher of Noxhelm, the house has claimed over a hundred lives with some of the bodies said to have been buried in the crawl spaces. Visitors claim to have witnessed lights flickering, doors slamming, and other unexplained incidents. But one thing is for certain - whoever owns the home is doomed for despair, destruction, and death. Ben and Brenda Biggs are the new homeowners of 203 Moorgate Street, and have invited the neighbourhood over for a housewarming party. They seem like a nice couple, which is a shame. You were invited. This is where your story begins.

Friday, April 28 at 7 pm. Tickets $10 available at the link below. Please RSVP by April 15 by emailing [email protected] with names of those who will be attending and purchase your ticket.

Freaky Friday – A New Musical       A review by David MacKenzie

2/2/2023

It’s only Thursday, but “Freaky Friday’ is here! The new musical production by the Leduc Drama Society opens tonight at the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts, with another show Friday and two more on Saturday.

I had the opportunity to attend the dress rehearsal and I have to say this show is a gem and absolutely worthwhile. For anyone who has been closeted away from live theatre for too long, it is a wonderful treat to see and hear the cast of ‘Freaky Friday’ on stage.

The director, Erin McLean, well known for her great abilities as a performer, has done an excellent job on this production. The cast, from top to bottom, put all their hearts, expressions and voices into this play. And what voices they have!

I have always been partial to musicals. What makes some musicals stand out, of course, is the musical score and the voices of the performers. And, in Freaky Friday, there is an abundance of good songs and the Leduc Drama singing talent is impressive. Carly Pettitt plays Ellie, the stressed-out daughter and Erin Raine plays Katherine the control-freak mother. They are not just the lead actors, they are real stars. I am always amazed at the talent that some people have and sometimes all you can do is to sit back and be in awe and be entertained by them. (And maybe secretly wish you had a fraction of their talent yourself!). Honourable mention to Scott McKenzie who always gives his all in his dramatic and musical efforts and also to a rising young star named Lucas Paterson who plays Adam.

There is a cast of 21 plus a very good band, and many others in the background who have made possible this fantastic production, not to mention the welcome appearance of the Connectivity rope skipping team. There are some familiar faces in the show and many new ones as well. The whole cast is so important that it is a shame all cannot be highlighted. It is always wonderful to see Leanne Hiebert, who took on several roles, back on stage. Len Marshall and Keith Gummer also again brought their experience and talent to the stage. Again, it’s unfair that everyone can’t be mentioned. But the good news is that you can go see the show for yourself and enjoy everyone’s performance.

Freaky Friday is great! Congrats to all involved. It’s real and it’s happening at the Maclab Centre starting tonight.
