Auditions! Cry-Baby the Musical

1/13/2022

AUDITIONS!
‘Cry-Baby’ the musical. Produced by the Leduc Drama Society, to be performed at the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts May 12-14 2022.

Auditions will be held Sunday, January 23 from 12:30-2:30 pm, and Wednesday, January 26 from 6-9 pm. If you are interested in booking an audition spot, please email director Megan Wagner at [email protected] with your name and which day you are available to audition.

Please prepare your favourite Broadway number or 1950’s rock and roll song under 4 minutes in length to sing at your audition. A sound system will be available for you to play any backing tracks you may need.

It's 1954. Everyone likes Ike, nobody likes communism and Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker is the coolest boy in Baltimore. He's a bad boy with a good cause – truth, justice and the pursuit of rock and roll. Cry-Baby and the square rich girl, Allison, are star-crossed lovers at the center of this world. Fueled by hormones and the new rhythms of rock and roll, she turns her back on her squeaky clean boyfriend, Baldwin, to become a "drape" (a Baltimore juvenile delinquent) and Cry-Baby's moll. At the other end of the topsy-turvy moral meritocracy of 1954 America, Baldwin is the king of the squares and leads his close-harmony pals against the juvenile delinquents, who are ultimately arrested for arson, sending the drapes all off to prison. It's Romeo and Juliet meets High School Hellcats.

Don’t be a square! Come on out and audition for this super fun show! (Although in this show, we definitely need some squares :P)

*Please note that the Leduc Drama Society playhouse and the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts have both opted in to the Restriction Exemption Program*
*This is a volunteer opportunity*

A Bowl of Soup - A Review by David MacKenzie

7/21/2021

It was a new experience for me to be attend a dramatic production by way of Zoom. Certainly, the normal physical connection between the cast and the audience was not possible but, nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised that my senses of hearing and sight were all the more engaged while watching Leduc Drama Society’s new production, “A Bowl of Soup”, directed by Emily Rutledge.

The setting/presentation of the play, with each character framed and sitting in their own separate kitchens was a bit counter-intuitive to me at first - I didn’t get it. But then, I did, and then it was time to listen.
Each character tells a story. Yes, it was all about food. Well, it was also about family. Actually it was also about memories and hardship and learning. Each vignette is about simple things that turn out to be very meaningful parts of our life. The play was food for the soul.

Becky Gray plays Ashby, who was able to make you actually feel the warmth of gumbo in her body when she spoke. Megan Wagner played Esther who conveyed a welcoming and genuine spirit, and told a touching story. Sharon Reichert was natural and unpretentious in her role as Milly, while Darryl Bleau effectively brought the audience into his world. Eric Laroque was mature, grounded and believable in his portrayal of Oscar. I was touched by emotion as I listened to his story.

A Bowl of Soup reminds the audience that the family that eats together, builds memories together. It shows how soup and stories and hardships can bind us all together in ways we can never predict and which can last a lifetime. And not to be forgotten, that food is good!

Hats off to the Leduc Drama Society for their commitment to the Arts, even when conditions have been Covid tough. This group shows the same tenacity that the Drama Society showed in years past when their Playhouse was out of service and they had to rehearse in all types of strange venues. Life can be tough but this group show us all how to perservere – as long as someone brings something to eat!
